Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 8, 1892. He graduated from the University of Miami with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1912. After graduation he worked for several years as a chemical engineer at the DuPont Company in Delaware before becoming an officer on the staff of the Wright-Martin Company of Philadelphia where he developed and patented several new types of aviation hardware
During World War I he served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps as an aerial observer aboard the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38). After the war he returned to Wright-Martin, where he worked on new airplane glider designs and also consulted with the United States Navy on ship design.
